Giant Eagle Reverses Their Decision To Eliminate Double Coupons...But Don't Get Too Excited

I wrote here about their plan to eliminate the double coupons. Sometimes it pays to stay up late -- WKYC reporter Dick Russ writes that Giant Eagle came to their senses and as of tomorrow (well, today), you can double your coupons again!

This is not a permanent reversal however.

Store executives claim to be responding to customer complaints that there wasn't enough notice. So now you can double through September 30th. Would love to know the statistics...you know, numbers of coupons actually redeemed for double discounts on a weekly basis.

In any case, you still only have a few weeks to do it, then I guess Giant Eagle will revert back to their original, non-consumer friendly plan. Peace Out - 3C

I cant believe this is happening, even with having a job and assistance it is hard to afford paper products and some better things to eat, with double coupons I usually save up to 60% on my bill now I will just have to take my business elsewhere.

Heather, thank you for sharing your concerns. It's really hard to believe Giant Eagle is willing to lose customers by ignoring basic customr service. If they think there are no other grocers, they better think again!

I don't understand what you people are thinking! Giant Eagle did this back in 2001, and it was only supposed to last a month. Here it is six years later and they decide to eliminate it and you're all complaining about it. I don't see Heinens or Wal-Mart or Marc's doubling coupons.

Thanks for commenting, it's always nice to get a different perspective. I'm thinking however, that in 2001, Giant Eagle was still competing with TOPS...in fact they were until recently -- for top market share. As for Marc's, they have their own pricing niche; and Heinen's, which I frequent myself, even has items on the shelves that cost less than Giant Eagle. Plus, they are all about customer service and that is really my point. When you shop at Heinen's you have a larger number of cashiers and it's much more pleasant to check out your items. The people who work at Giant Eagle are fabulous and helpful. I just don't feel the Corporate structure is focusing on consumer issues lately.
